Introduction

About Caldo

Caldo has been a leading UK supplier of hot gas filtration equipment since 1992 and has made more than 60 successful installations on many different processes, all over the world.

Caldo's personnel have been involved in the development of hot gas filtration technology since the late 1980s and have direct experience of all of the most important applications of hot gas filtration.

Caldo are located in their own premises in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England.

About Hot Gas Filtration

Hot gas filtration is the removal of solids from gases at temperatures above 250 degC. Ceramic filter elements are widely used on hot gases at temperatures up to 900 degC.

Hot Gas Filtration Equipment

Caldo hot gas filters use low density alumino-silicate ceramic filter elements in modular, purpose-built vessels. Often the filter is supplied complete with solids discharge system, vessel trace heating and insulation, and with an integrated control panel. Multiple filter vessels are used in parallel to achieve higher capacities.

Caldo ceramic filters have been used to filter gases on many processes:

  • incineration of various materials
  • burnout furnaces in lost wax foundries
  • plasma melting of catalyst for precious metal recovery
  • demilitarisation of munitions and chemical weapons
  • production of nano materials
  • gasification of waste wood and other materials
  • pyrolysis of waste plastics and other materials
  • manufacture of high performance ceramic fibres
  • sulphuric acid recovery

In all these various duties Caldo understood the requirements of the process and helped to establish how the ceramic filter would be best employed.

Ceramic Filtration Equipment Components

The critical component of a hot gas filter is the filter element and Caldo supplies ceramic filter elements to customers all over the world. The ceramic filter elements that Caldo supplies are the industry standard size, 1000mm long x 60mm diameter with a 80mm diameter flange.

The weakest part of a ceramic filter is at the top, where it is clamped into the header plate. Caldo has developed a proprietary design for strengthening the top of the element by using metal collars both inside and outside the ceramic. These collars work with the compressible gaskets to provide a solution to many of the causes of element breakages.

Solids are removed from ceramic filter elements by on-line reverse pulse cleaning. Caldo supplies the valves and controller that go to make up most of a reverse pulse cleaning system.

Related Equipment and Systems

Powder Feeders

Ceramic filters can be used for dry scrubbing by adding an active powder to the gas stream. The powder is retained on the surface of the filter and then reacts with the gas as the gas passes through. Caldo supply variable speed powder feeders to allow sorbent materials to be added to the gas stream from a convenient location.

Afterburners and Coolers

Hot gas filters are often used on processes where the gas is first burned in an afterburner to eliminate VOCs before being further treated for other pollutants. Caldo design and supply afterburners and gas coolers to combine with ceramic filters to produce complete waste gas treatment solutions.

TRADS Munitions Disposal

The first transportable ammunition disposal system was installed in Bosnia by Caldo and its partner in 2006, and the second such system is now under construction.
